Sometimes, when you're cutting turf (on a 13" macbook, for example) the legend is larger than the area on the map and there are a lot of zooms in and out required to cut the turf. It would be super cool if you could minimize the legend so that you only see it if you want to check your work, but as you're cutting turf the legend can be hidden
